What Are Pre- and Post-Destination Wedding Events?

February 24, 2026

When you’re planning a destination wedding, the celebration doesn’t just happen on your wedding day — it often spans several days of fun, connection, and unforgettable memories.

That’s where pre- and post-wedding events come in! These are the additional gatherings you can plan before and after your wedding day to bring everyone together, make guests feel welcome, and make the most of your time in paradise.

Keep in mind that all of these events are optional, but they can add an extra layer of bonding and celebration to your wedding weekend.

 Pre-Wedding Events

Pre-wedding events happen before the ceremony and are designed to welcome your guests and set the tone for the celebration ahead.

Here are the most popular ones:

 Welcome Party or Welcome Dinner

Your chance to say “hello and thank you for coming!” before the wedding day.

  • When: Usually the night of the majority of guest arrivals. For example, if your wedding is on a Saturday, this event is typically on Thursday evening.
  • Vibe: Casual and social — think cocktails, local bites, beach bonfires, or a festive dinner
  • Goal: Break the ice and help guests meet each other before the big day

 Rehearsal Dinner

A smaller, more intimate event, typically for your closest friends and family or wedding party.

  • When: Usually held the evening before the wedding
  • Vibe: Elegant or laid-back — a nice dinner with speeches, toasts, and laughs
  • Goal: Practice the ceremony order and celebrate with your VIPs

Tip: This event can either be for your entire wedding party, just your bridal party, or close friends/family. There is no ‘normal’ here, so do what makes sense for you.

 Optional Group Activities

Some couples plan fun group experiences before the wedding — like snorkeling, yoga, hiking, or a catamaran cruise — to create shared memories and make the destination experience more meaningful.

Signature Destination Weddings can help you organize various excursions that people can book/pay for on their own, but everyone gets to have fun together! Or, if you want to host friends and family, we are happy to give you some great ideas and plan this excursion for you.

 Post-Wedding Events

Post-wedding events happen after the ceremony and are all about relaxing, reminiscing, and spending a little extra time together before everyone goes home.

 Day-After Brunch

The most common post-wedding event!

  • When: The morning after the wedding
  • Vibe: Relaxed and cheerful — often poolside or on the beach
  • Goal: Share stories, laugh about the night before, and say proper goodbyes

 Farewell Events or Group Excursions

Some couples plan one last adventure before everyone heads home — like a sunset sail, beach BBQ, or private tour. It’s the perfect way to wrap up the experience and thank your guests one more time. Ask us about our favorite farewell excursions at your destination!

Do You Need Pre- and Post-Events?

Not necessarily — but they make your wedding weekend feel more personal, immersive, and connected.
Think of them as the bookends of your celebration: they welcome your guests in and send them home full of love, laughter, and memories.

Signature Tip: Keep It Balanced

Your guests are traveling for you, but also to enjoy the destination. Mix in hosted events with free time, so everyone feels relaxed and unrushed.
