_____

After helping more than 1000 couples get married in the tropics, one of the most common questions we get asked is, “When is the best time of year to get married in Tulum?”

That makes sense! Most of our couples don’t live in the tropics, and they aren’t familiar with seasonal weather patterns or local cultural events that will impact their wedding date. That’s where we step in to understand the couple’s priorities, requests, and requirements in order to help find the perfect wedding date.

What season is best for a destination wedding in Tulum?

The first thing we want our couples to know is how seasons work in Tulum. Tulum has two main seasons each year: dry season and rainy season. Dry season is when temperatures are lower and there is much less chance of rain each day. Couples can expect the dry season to start each year in November and end each year in April. The rainy season is typically between May and October each year. During the rainy season in Tulum, couples can expect a bit of rain each day and higher humidity.

What is the dry season like in Tulum for a destination wedding?

During Tulum’s dry season, wedding couples can expect sunshine! There is lots of sun and most days have clear skies or are partly cloudy. Temperatures during Tulum’s dry season are more pleasant both during the day and at night. Ocean temperatures are warm and perfect for swimming. Since the weather is the best during the dry season in Tulum, there are also more travelers, and prices can be higher.

What are the benefits of having a destination wedding during the dry season in Tulum?

One of the benefits of getting married during the dry season in Tulum is pretty obvious. It’s not likely to rain on your wedding day. This means that couples are less likely to have to use a secondary venue for their ceremony or reception due to bad weather.

Another benefit to getting married during the dry season in Tulum is the better daily temperature and humidity. When it’s not raining every day, the humidity is lower, so the outside temperature feels nicer. During the dry season in Tulum, daily temperatures are typically 79–86°F (26–30°C). This means that even ceremonies during the middle of the day will have tolerable temperatures for your wedding guests. At night, it’s a bit cooler, but still great temperatures. At night in Tulum during the dry season, the temperature is typically 66–72°F (19–22°C). This is perfect for nighttime receptions and ceremonies. Guests can enjoy cooler temperatures at night and still be comfortable with just a light jacket or scarf.

Since the weather is generally better in Tulum during the dry season, that also means that there are typically fewer travel delays and disruptions for couples and their wedding guests. Fewer storms mean fewer chances of flights being cancelled or delayed.

Another benefit of the dry season in Tulum is that less rain generally means fewer bugs. We hear from our couples and their wedding guests that there are fewer issues with bugs and mosquitoes compared to the rainy season in Tulum. This is great because in Tulu,m most wedding ceremonies and receptions are held outdoors.

The final benefit to getting married during the dry season in Tulum is that the drier season in Tulum is great for activities. The region of Tulum is full of activities for our couples and their wedding guests to explore. There are opportunities for travelers to visit Mayan ruins, swim in cenotes, go snorkeling, or go bike riding. These activities are all outdoors, so when there is less rain these activities are more enjoyable and have a lower chance of getting canceled due to poor weather conditions.

Many of our couples want to offer their wedding guests the opportunity to join in group activities and outdoor wedding events, like a catamaran cruise. With less chance of rain during the dry season, these activities are less likely to be canceled due to bad weather.

What are the downsides of a destination wedding in Tulum during the dry season?

There are a lot of benefits to getting married in Tulum during the dry season, but there are also some disadvantages that we want couples to be aware of. First, the dry season has ideal weather, and that means that lots of people want to travel during this time. The dry season is the high season for travel in Tulum.

With so many travelers coming to the area, prices are higher. Couples can expect room rates to be higher for their guests. Some resorts charge higher prices for wedding packages during the high season. Sometimes these higher rates and prices can be just a little more, but some resorts can charge up to 50% more during high season. We can help you price out resorts and wedding packages that are the most worth it during high season.

Another downside to a wedding during the dry season is crowds. Since you’ll find the best weather during the dry season, you’ll also find the most crowds. This means the resorts will be fuller and the tourist attractions like cenotes and Mayan ruins will also have more tourists. Especially for smaller resorts with fewer amenities, pools and beaches can feel cramped during the dry season. We can help you choose a resort that won’t feel too crowded even during peak travel times. Of course, if you want complete control over a resort, we can help you find a property that is perfect for buy-outs. That wa,y you can have a resort or boutique hotel all to yourself!

The dry season can also mean more destination weddings in Tulum. More couples want to get married in Tulum during the dry season to take advantage of the best weather. Couples may have to book further in advance if they want to secure the best venues for their destination wedding in Tulum during the dry season.

Since there are more destination weddings happening each day during the dry season in Tulum, there is a higher chance that there will be more than one wedding happening each day. Each resort has different policies around how many weddings can take place per day at each resort. Some resorts in Tulum only allow one wedding per day. Some larger resorts in Tulum can allow multiple weddings per day. If a couple doesn’t want another wedding taking place at their resort on the same day as their wedding day, we can help them find a resort that only allows one wedding per day.

What is the rainy season like in Tulum for a destination wedding?

When our couples hear the words “rainy season,” they typically expect a downpour of rain all day ,every day. This is not the case in Tulum. Yes, there is rain during the rainy season, but it is not constant drizzle. During the rainy season in Tulu,m you can expect there to be some rain most days. But this rain is typically for short, heavy bursts. These rainstorms typically happen for brief periods each day. The rest of the day during the rainy season is typically sunny and dry.

The rainy season in Tulum can have other names. Sometimes the rainy season in Tulum is called the wet season because of the high levels of precipitation and humidity. What are the downsides of a destination wedding in Tulum during the rainy season?

The biggest downside of having a destination wedding in Tulum during the rainy season is obviously the rain. While there is not constant rain or drizzle during the rainy season in Tulum, the short bursts of rain can happen suddenly. If there is a sudden downpour of rain this can disrupt destination wedding plans.

There can be flooding in low lying areas during the rainy season in Tulum. Resorts are used to the daily burst of rain during the rainy season in Tulum and they take measures to eliminate the chances of flooding at resorts, but a sudden downpour of rain can flood a local road and lead to travel delays.

The rain can also make water more murky. If you are snorkeling during or shortly after a rain storm, this can make the visibility lower. Ocean water can also be less clear after a rain storm.

The daily rain can also lead to more bugs during the rainy season in Tulum. Mosquitos and bugs tend to be more prevalent during the rainy season in Tulum. Some resorts are better than others at addressing and eliminating the number of bugs and mosquitos during the rainy season, so we can help you find a resort that has less bugs for your destination wedding in Tulum even during the rainy season.
