Get Married in Belize: What You Need to Know
Great news! Marriage ceremonies in Belize are internationally recognized, meaning your wedding can be legally binding, not just symbolic. Your Signature Destination Wedding planner will guide you through the requirements, most of which can be arranged before your arrival. We’ll coordinate with your wedding venue to register your marriage, allowing you to relax on the beach instead of visiting a courthouse.
To Obtain a Special License in Belize:
- Both partners must be in the country for at least three days before applying for the license. Original documents are required, but certified copies with lifted seals are also acceptable.
- If you’re unable to stay for three days, you can apply for a Special License for an additional fee.
- We will email you the application forms and assist with the process.
Required Documents:
- Identification: Original documents or certified copies.
- Citizenship: No residency requirement.
- Blood Test: Not required if both partners are over 18.
- Marital Status: If divorced or widowed, provide original or certified copies of divorce or death certificates.
- Witnesses: Two witnesses aged 18 or older are needed. If you’re eloping, we’ll arrange for witnesses at your wedding venue.
- Age Verification: Proof that both partners are over 18.

Belize Room Blocks
How Room Blocks Work
In Belize, room blocks function differently than in more tourist-heavy destinations like Mexico and Jamaica. Due to the smaller size of local properties, negotiating prices below the published “rack rate” isn’t typically possible.
Holding a Room Block
Each property in Belize has its own procedure for holding a room block. Generally, couples are required to pay a non-refundable deposit equivalent to two nights’ stay per room, which can be applied toward their wedding costs. This policy helps properties manage the risk of unbooked rooms.
Finding Pricing
Locating accurate pricing for room blocks can be challenging online. Many properties advertise low rates for limited entry-level rooms, making it difficult to gauge actual availability and pricing for group bookings. This often leads to frustration as the reality of rates may be much higher.
Room Availability
Most properties in Belize have 20 rooms or fewer, with only a few having over 30. Consequently, accommodating more than 40 guests can be a challenge, as many properties excel in individual travel but may not meet the service standards expected for weddings.
